A violent plot was recently foiled in Maryland. A bomb was set to detonate in a civilian building, followed by a mass shooting of the building’s inhabitants. The motivation was political in nature, as the attacker disagreed with the policies and activities of individuals located in the building. The accused, a 25 year old man, will be in court Monday to face federal weapons charges.
Sounds like terrorism so far, right?
Read the MSNBC report:
GREENBELT, Md. - The father of a man accused of plotting to bomb an abortion clinic said he felt he had no choice but to contact police about his son’s activities. Robert Weiler Sr. told The Washington Post for an article published Saturday that the decision was agonizing, but that “our concern was just to make sure nobody got hurt.
Weiler planned to use the bomb and a gun to “shoot doctors who provided abortions,” according to an affidavit filed Thursday in federal court by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He called the ATF from the rest stop where he was arrested and later confessed to the plot, authorities said.
Of course, in today’s selectively paranoid e-world, the MSM (mainstream media) cannot be trusted because they are agents of special interests; the real story can only come from individuals who type on home computers. So where is the outrage? Where the outrage is NOT is more the story. Very little commentary on this foiled terrorist plot has appeared in the more vocal anti-terrorist blogs (and I say “many†because obviously I could not check every single anti-terrorist blog, but the ones I did check had nothing on Maryland). Yet physical confrontations at a native blockade apparently warrant comparison to the widespread Islamacist campaign against the West. Failing to blindly support the aggression du jour can also find one labeled a terrorist “sympathizerâ€.
This small exercise simply enforces the notion that the terrorism label is simply a function of perceived legality and the palatability of the cause. With such double-standards, it’s difficult for any fair-minded person to get too excited about the enduring non-MSM hysteria concerning terrorism.
Other Views on the Maryland Bomb Plot:
- Shakespeare’s Sister sees the scant attention paid to the Maryland plot as a symptom of a fatalistic cultural shift to the right: “This is what happens when we, as a culture, tolerate eliminationist rhetoric and treat it as legitimate discourse. I wish liberals would get half as exercised about the steady stream of eliminationist speech directed at us as the wingnuts do about the phrase ‘Happy Holidays.’ “
- Peregrin Wood of Irregular Times cited partisanship in the apparent double standard applying the terrorist label: “In the view of the Bush Administration, nonviolent progressive activists who disagree with George W. Bush are more of a threat than right wingers who plan to kill Americans with bombs.”
The MSM (mainstream media) has done a generally sound job of concealing the violent reality of the war on terror. Thank goodness for Google video. It seems someone has posted a promotional / recruiting video for the Islamic Army in Iraq (IAI), one of the “resistance†groups in Iraq. Like Al Qaeda, the IAI considers democracy to be incompatible with Islam and aims to expel all foreign troops from Iraq. Violence is the Army’s main modus operandi, and civilian targets are fair game. The group is responsible for several executions, including Italian journalist / Red Cross worker Enzo Baldoni and American contractor Ronald Schulz. The Islamic Army later denounced Baldoni as a spy during a recent Al-Jazeera Interview. (it’s likely that Baldoni’s death was retaliation for the enthusiasm of embattled Premier Silvio Berlusconi)
The promotional video consists mainly of IAI militants blowing up US and British targets, mixed with intermittent interviews. There is a rather disturbing scene with a small child trying to lift an AK-47, to say nothing of the scenes featuring burning civilians/combatants.
The titles and audio are in Arabic of course, but the visuals still adequately convey that Islamist threat is real, and the combatants rarely distinguish Western builders from Western destroyers.
It’s not clear how long this will stay up so do view it hastily (click images)!!
So it has been over a week since a new post … several mini-projects related to blogging are underway, not the least of which being the migration of Jack’s Newswatch from its wordpress.com confines to a brand new web space. The site can now be reached via http://www.jacksnewswatch.com.
A number of fairly successful blogs are using services like Blogger or are hosted on collective webspaces like Wordpress.com. While these services make setup and maintenance of a blog very easy, there are several reasons why the serious blogger should consider using an independent installation of Wordpress:
- Content Control. Publish the content you want, when you want, how you want. Saturate your blog with large pictures or words your service provider may find objectionable. You can control advertisements on your site and possibly make a little revenue.
- Data Backup. Most traditional web hosts allow you to access your databases directly, allowing you to make backups of your data. This also allows you to move your site in whole to a different web host without having to start over.
- Unlimited Templates. Wordpress.com and similar hosting services usually let you use a limited number of templates. By contrast there are literally hundreds of templates available on the web as well as the option to create custom web templates.
- Freedom of Plugins. You can install [nearly] any plugin you want on your own installation and many of these plugins can become indispensable. There is a slew of Cron-related plugins that will help you automate tasks ranging from regular database backup to pinging on future posts. Some plugins, like the Google Sitemaps plugin and Ultimate Tag Warrior, are vital to attracting visitors to your website. While technically not a plugin, Slimstat provides a detailed breakdown of the traffic on your website – complete with ever-useful statistics on nation of origin.
Of course the negative side of hosting independently is that you have to pay for your own hosting/domain and usually have to perform the Wordpress installation yourself. This may be financially unfeasible and technically daunting to some, so one supposes the choice to go independent boils down to your comfort level.
Incidentally I have some spare webspace so if you are a fairly prominent blog who doesn’t mind covering the cost of your own domain name do feel free to contact me. No $ involved - inquire within.
After suffering weeks of that hideously overused standard template (which essentially flags the blogger as being a complete neophyte), Cynics Unlimited now has a new template … or at least a slight variation on the stylish Wuhan theme. Regards to Michelle for the custom header. This theme will be tweaked slightly over the coming months, but for the most part the layout is adequate to our needs. Now only “1000″ other people’s sites look like ours, as opposed to “1000000000000000″!
Some good news and some bad news … The good news is that, despite being online for less than a week, people are reading Cynics Unlimited. This is evidenced by a Toronto Sun quotation taken from The Jane Creba Factor while reporting on bloggers venting their grief. The bad news is that the quotation in question (”one has to wonder whether we’d all be falling over ourselves to demand government action had Jane been another Mohamed or Shaquan”) was attributed to Jack’s News Watch. Fortunately, Jack is a standup guy and searched for the actual origin of the quote to redirect inquisitive Sun readers. Much respect is due.
Speaking of Jane Creba, Jack’s website links to a Globe and Mail editorial by Margaret Wente. This truthful-though-not-quite-complete summary of the causes behind gun violence are indicative of the epic battle brewing between two groups of thinkers:
- Those who think racism/exclusion and little else contribute to the current state of the predominantly black-on-black warfare taking place in Toronto (largely socialist and/or black types)
- Those who think black culture and little else contribute to the current state of the predominantly black-on-black warfare taking place in Toronto (largely conservative and/or white types)
Of course, our trifecta of government incompetence has aggravated the situation by staging a hasty conference on how to combat gun crime … without the attendance of any actual leaders (Mayor, Premier and Prime Minister respectively) or an invitation to the black community groups who have been campaiging for months to create such a conference. Predictably, the black community groups held a press conference to vent to an all-too-eager media, which will in turn sell a lot of papers by furthering tensions. How can it not be inferred that the government is STILL not legitimately interested in bringing peace to Toronto? By catalyzing a conflict between two groups of law-abiding Canadians citizens with 99% similar objectives they’ve achieved exactly the opposite.
