Tutorial: DVD Movie Backups with DVDShrink (3 of 6)

Summary: DVD Shrink is a software program used to make backups of DVD movies. Using DVD Shrink, you can read data from one DVD then write it to a blank DVD or to your hard drive. The copied disc can be played in standalone DVD players or computers that contain a DVD-ROM with the appropriate DVD player software. Part 3 steps through the installation and configuration of the software packages used in later sections of the tutorial.

Installing DVD Shrink

  1. UnZIP the downloaded ZIP file. Click on the DVD Shrink executable file to start the installation process

  3. Click on the Next button when the welcome screen appears.

  5. Read the end-user license agreement and click on the radio button captioned “I accept the agreement”. Click on the Next button to continue.

  7. Click on the Next button if to install DVD Shrink in the default directory (usually “C:\Program Files \DVD Shrink”). Alternatively, click on the Browse button to select a different directory (then click on the Next button to continue).

  9. Click on the Next button to create a shortcut in the default folder. Alternatively, click on the Browse button to select a different folder (then click on the Install button once the new directory is selected).

  11. Click on the check boxes to activate or deactivate desktop / quick launch icons. Click on the Next button.

  13. Review the installation settings and click on the Install button to begin copying files.

Installing DVD Decrypter

DVD Decrypter is a free tool that enables users to decrypt and copy a DVD to hard disk. DVD Decrypter can read discs that cannot be directly ready by DVD Shrink.

  1. Double-click on the DVD Decrypter .EXE file to start the installation.

  3. Click on the Next button.

  5. Click on the check boxes to indicate which shortcut icons to create for DVD Decrypter. Click on the Next button when finished.

  7. Click on the Install button to install DVD Decrypter in the default directory. Alternatively, click on the Browse button to select a different directory before installation (then click on the Install button once the new directory is selected).

  9. Click on the No button when asked whether DVD Decrypter should check for newer version. Development on DVD Decrypter has ceased and the domain is now owned by Macrovision Europe (a copy protection company that has little appreciation for DVD rippers whether used legally or not!)

  11. Make sure the check box captioned “Run DVD Decrypter” is selected. Click on the Finish button. The DVD Decrypter program should launch for the first time.

  13. Click on the menu item Tools–>Settings

  15. Click on the I/O tab. Click on the check box captioned “Ignore Read Errors”. Click on the OK button. This option will force DVD Decrypter to finish reading DVD discs with Arccos and other non-standard copy protection.

Installing Daemon Tools

Daemon tools creates one or more “virtual drives” that allow users to mount images as virtual drives. This application can be used in combination with DVD Decrypter to backup discs that cannot be read directly by DVD Shrink.

  1. Double-click on the Daemon Tools .EXE file to start installation.

  3. Click on the Next button.

  5. Read the License Agreement. Click on the I Agree button.

  7. If the SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD) layer is not installed, the installation script will provide a warning before attempting to reboot the computer. Click OK twice to reboot the computer. Repeat steps 2 and 3 once the installation script automatically restarts.

  9. Click on the check boxes to select desired shortcut icons for Daemon Tools. Click on the Next button.

  11. Verify that the destination disk has enough disk space. Click on the Install button to install Daemon Tools to the default directory. Alternatively, click on the Browse button to select an different directory (then click on the Install button once the new directory is selected).
