Also, I've thought for years that had the Palestinians held out the hand of friendship to Israel rather than the hate they continue to display, the economy you mention would by now be fact rather than an unrealized dream. I think they will be in financial trouble as long as they require contributions from other nations in order to survive. Even if they bend and become more Israel friendly, the funding probably won't be restored to former levels. Hamas may need to concentrate more on generating wealth through trade and production rather than sabre-rattling. Should be interesting to watch (particularly since Hamas has made a career of antagonizing its most logical trading partner). Blog correction: the line "can now function financially without Western aid" is a premature statement until Iran/Qatar and other middle eastern countries show a long-term pattern of funding, rather than a symbolic gesture. I read somewhere that the PA has a budget of around a billion dollars a year. So they’ve picked just picked up 100 million from a couple of (likely) onetime donors which gives them another month of breathing space. Maybe less because Japan just pulled their funding this morning.
